...other than mercury clean-up and food preservation, what are its earthbound applications?

APOD's explanation led to my curiousity of the bacteria's ability to alter its DNA... and the bacteria's strength against radiation. Have you seen Conan the Bacterium used in medicine or protection/recovery from nuclear warfare?

There has been talks of engineering it to cleanup nuclear spills/leaks, I don't know how tha's going. Also for cleaning the cooling systems at atomic power plants,
