That's not Rigel (APOD 11 Dec 2006)

Post by RaM » Mon Dec 11, 2006 1:24 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forum. Sorry for registering for pointing out an error.

Rigel is the bright star at the top right corner in the full picture.
The star shown near the center of the picture fragment is psi Eridani.

RaM,
I didn't see the caption or the image prior to reading your post so I don't know what it stated then. I do know that as it is stated now "More formally known as IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula glows primarily by light reflected from Rigel, the brightest star in the upper right of the full image." it is correct as you pointed out.

BMAONE23,
Yes, it is correct now. When I read it, the text said that the star near the center was Rigel. Someone else noticed who could fix it, fortunately.
