"Children of the sun" (APOD 16 Nov 2006)

Note the distinct arc of "stars" from about 8 o'clock to 9 o'clock. Is this feature real or an artifact of some sort ?

Looking at the MPG file for 061111_c3.mpg here http://lasco-www.nrl.navy.mil/daily_mpg/ you see that the stars are stars and not artifact. note the curiously fast moving comet at the 3:00 position that quickly moves to the 2:59 position prior to exiting the frame?

Streaks on SOHO image(s)

Post by mwallis » Thu Nov 16, 2006 6:29 pm

I was looking at the original 20:42 image and was wondering about the streaks above Jupitor. I initially thought "meteor" but that's obviously not true.

In the movie, we see lots of them - usually just in one frame, sometimes traceable in several. Are these noise in the camera or real objects passing between SOHO and the sun? In particular, 23:18 seems to show something passing from 11:00 to 4:00 (or vice versa). Is the inner system really as busy as the images would imply.

I believe, if I am not mistaken, that the vast majority of single frame streaks are things like solar ejecta VIA flare activity and cosmic rays. So in most cases are real things but not very visible except for through a camera lense.

Yeah, but if you watch many of those videos in slow motion (<.5 speed) there are a lot of streaks in all different directions and speeds and apparent brightness. I have a hard time believing the ones I'm seeing came from the same location, i.e. the sun.

By the way I'm not reffering to the vast amounts of noise in these clips.
