In the southern sky I can see now at night a crescent moon and a very bright star.. er..planet next to it...what is it?

And also I found a photo of a national flag with a crescent moon and a star by it... its Turkey
All things great and small.

Getting out my handy dandy Nightsky, Backyard Astronomy for everyone magazine. Checking the December charts, looking southwest about December 3-4, seems this chart labels that star as Venus on the 4th.

How's that for a little old grey haired lady living on an island, oh, with 3 kids.
