Asteroid Itokawa Formed By Slow Collision Of Two Asteroids?

This APOD image looks to me like asteroid Itokawa was formed by the recent slow collision of two smaller asteroids. The "waisteline" was formed by matter settling to the surface. This would explain why there are no or few craters.

Sounds like an interesting idea - it would imply a very low density I would have thought - this istrue for a lot of asteroids but is it low enough?

I agree with with your view Empeda2 but also with your question :?: .
makc-i regularly visit the APOD site; it`s habit forming :P . You may be right . It just seemed to me that the post dealt more with a merger than a more routine impact crater?
Will visit again.
