could someone tell me if this is really APOD thread (*points at its title)?
hate to go and check, but moving this to Cafe is on my to-do list.

Based on these three links of APOD, I would say it is APOD material.
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap051015.html
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap050602.html
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap041128.html

Total search for Eta Carinae brought up 19 APOD's.

Yet, I doubt it would even be applicable for the Cafe. :(

Careful what you wish for. If you see this one go bang, you may be about to witness a rather large gamma ray burst not long after. Goodbye life as we know it.

Bet you an ice cold brew this thing is just going to be a NOVAE, albeit quite a bright one. Few weeks ago on APOD, it was suggested gamma rays come from two very massive object colliding and I believe Eta is a single very big object, not two. And I will buy you two ice cold brews if it is a Supernovae. :)
