New designations - artistic error? (APOD 28 Aug 2006)

good morning,

I love APOD.

Today, something appeared to be not quite right.

As my friend, Craig Friedrich, noted in an email exchange this AM: "(the artist's image) shows the planets and dwarf planets ... The sun is in the left but the lit side is on the right ..."

Was this just an artistic error?

you have right! I noted the same! It only can be a artistic error.

The 28 August 2006 picture is beautiful and I printed it for my wall paper gallery of apod pictures. Then I noticed a curious thing--the sun is shining to the upper right of all the planets with a sun on the left. I know it's a composite picture, but shouldn't the sun be making the light on the planets?

It took me a while but I noticed it too. I emailed the APOD guys and I was sent to this web site. It looks pretty good.

I sent email to the IAU home page.

That picture could end up in text books. Its lousy science. It seems all the astronomy discussion groups just want pretty pictures.

And, I do have to agree with C. Bell on this one.
