M42: The Great Nebula in Orion

Explanation: The Great Nebula in Orion, an immense, nearby starbirth region, is probably the most famous of all astronomical nebulas. Here, glowing gas surrounds hot young stars at the edge of an immense interstellar molecular cloud only 1500 light-years away. In the featured deep image in assigned colors highlighted by emission in oxygen and hydrogen, wisps and sheets of dust and gas are particularly evident. The Great Nebula in Orion can be found with the unaided eye near the easily identifiable belt of three stars in the popular constellation Orion. In addition to housing a bright open cluster of stars known as the Trapezium, the Orion Nebula contains many stellar nurseries. These nurseries contain much hydrogen gas, hot young stars, proplyds, and stellar jets spewing material at high speeds. Also known as M42, the Orion Nebula spans about 40 light years and is located in the same spiral arm of our Galaxy as the Sun.

I've seen so many pictures of the Orion Nebula that I'm getting a bit tired of them. But it is still fun to look at details in the nebula!


So thank you for this image, Fényes Lóránd! But I've got to ask you something. Your name in the caption is linked to more of your images, and I always love to see more images by an astrophotographer who has produced an image that became an APOD.

Unfortunately, you post your images on Instagram, and I don't have Instagram! That means that I can only see twelve of your images, and I can't enlarge them, because I can't log in!

Personally I would be particularly interested in seeing a larger version of your picture of galaxy NGC 4216 with recent supernova SN 2024gy. I'm also really interested in your picture of the Siamese Twins galaxies in Virgo, NGC 4567 and NGC 4568, because they are rather rarely photographed.

Well anyway, thank you for your picture of the Orion Nebula! Looking forward to seeing you maybe making your other images more accessible!

It is incredible! That was the Orion Nebula. And it’s wild to think that there’s so much star formation right in our galaxy. It's why you like snakes and I get it, but for me it’s the beauty of the cosmos. I just can’t get over seeing images like this. Thanks for sharing!

The Orion Nebula is such a classic, but I totally get what Ann means about feeling a bit oversaturated with it! Every new image just seems to showcase the same beauty.
