APOD: Dark Ball in Inverted Starfield (2022 Nov 06)

Image Dark Ball in Inverted Starfield

Explanation: Does this strange dark ball look somehow familiar? If so, that might be because it is our Sun. In the featured image from 2012, a detailed solar view was captured originally in a very specific color of red light, then rendered in black and white, and then color inverted. Once complete, the resulting image was added to a starfield, then also color inverted. Visible in the image of the Sun are long light filaments, dark active regions, prominences peeking around the edge, and a moving carpet of hot gas. The surface of our Sun can be a busy place, in particular during Solar Maximum, the time when its surface magnetic field is wound up the most. Besides an active Sun being so picturesque, the plasma expelled can also become picturesque when it impacts the Earth's magnetosphere and creates auroras.

This is a fascinating-looking inverted portrait of the Sun and the stellar background. I like it!

As far as I remember one of the rules imposed in the past for a candidate APOD was that the compositions were forbidden.
I’m missing something

No such rule exists, or ever did. Nor should it.

I haven’t found any way to track down the step by step images that are mentioned in the description. Even the imager credit, Jim Lafferty, is not linked. Does anyone know more about the image and where such info might be found?

The problem is that this is a repeat of a ten-year-old APOD. The original, https://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap121015.html, did have links. But those links are now dead. He has an AstroBin presence, https://www.astrobin.com/users/Jim_Laff ... llections/, so maybe you could contact him.

It still remains a composition and time ago one of my pictures was questioned for this reason

I was wondering myself if the image of the sun ended up being inverted twice as implied by the wording in the text, or only once. The star field was clearly only inverted once.

I tried Astrobin but saw no links to contact him, perhaps because I’m not a member there. Thanks anyway, Chris.

I do like these transformations, because it reminds us that our conventional view of 'the universe' is partial, if that.

Maybe not in China though - from https://pagodaprojects.com/lucky-and-un ... -in-china/
• Seven — This is an unlucky number in Chinese. It is considered ghostly. The seventh month of the Chinese calendar is also called the “Ghost Month”. Activities during the month would include preparing ritualistic food offerings, burning incense, and burning joss paper, a papier-mâché form of material items such as clothes, gold and other fine goods for the visiting spirits of the ancestors. Elaborate meals (often vegetarian meals) would be served with empty seats for each of the deceased in the family treating the deceased as if they are still living During the month, the gates of hell are said to be open so ghosts and spirits are permitted to visit the living realm
