Explanation: Why can we see the entire face of this Moon? When the Moon is in a crescent phase, only part of it appears directly illuminated by the Sun. The answer is earthshine, also known as earthlight and the da Vinci glow. The reason is that the rest of the Earth-facing Moon is slightly illuminated by sunlight first reflected from the Earth. Since the Earth appears near full phase from the Moon -- when the Moon appears as a slight crescent from the Earth -- earthshine is then near its brightest. Featured here in combined, consecutively-taken, HDR images taken earlier this month, a rising earthshine Moon was captured passing slowly near the planet Venus, the brightest spot near the image center. Just above Venus is the star Dschubba (catalogued as Delta Scorpii), while the red star on the far left is Antares. The celestial show is visible through scenic cloud decks. In the foreground are the lights from Palazzolo Acreide, a city with ancient historical roots in Sicily, Italy.

Lots of goodies in this post. I especially love the celestial show reference.

The moon is not rising, but setting. It's a evening view, not morning.
Cheers, Herbert

Are we sure about the star names? Antares appears to be too far from Dschubba. What am I missing?

I have to agree - that can't be delta Scorpii.

I agree this has to be moonset - this phase can only be seen in the west just before moonset.

But it is Antares - I used Stellarium - for 9th Oct at 18:16 this was the situation - Antares looks a 'long way' form Dschubba but only because its a telephoto picture - the Moon is only half a degree in diameter on the sky and so the star are about 5 degrees apart which is about right. I think this is another manifestation of the 'moon illusion'.

Wow! I could have stayed on this APOD all day! It was beautiful! the
pictures and the video were awesome! Wish I could have kept the
annotations for this photo!
Right now I don't recall this APOD; but it is
really neat!
I believe this dog is waiting for his master to come home! It's
amazing how much dogs love us!

Antares is more like 8 degrees from Dschubba (δ Scorpii).

The shot has been taken by a sigma 105 mm. You can verify the framed field with your preferred planetarium software....and you are right the moon is setting since the shot was taken on the 9th of October. A typos that could be fixed. D

I put in annotations!
The annotations are in the original. On a PC at least, hover over the pic so the annotated version shows, then right-click and select "open in new tab". You should then be looking at the annotated image:

Actually; what I did was type the annotations in! I also made the pic Screen ready I'll have to try your little trick if I don't forget it!

Leonardo considers and was concerned to explain the effect that we gave his name to the ashen light of the Moon in a new phase.-
On one occasion in a commercial premises where there was a corridor with mirrors on both walls, it reflected over and over again to infinity the images that were reflected from the original to the left and right, causing an infinite row of the same image to appear in both mirrors. . We know that in each reflection some light energy is lost and that in some of them it will not have enough to achieve an image but we do not know in what number. The same thing happens with the ashen light that is produced with the reflection perpendicular to the bodies that receives it, that in some of these ways it is certain that it returns to the Sun again, as if to say that it has already performed a mischief.t
It is just a "reflection" on the reflection of ligh

My mistake. You made it look enough like the original that a quick glance had me fooled.
