APOD Image File Name

Post by dmiladinovich » Fri Sep 21, 2018 6:10 pm

Hi APOD members and admins!

I enjoy collecting APOD images for use as desktop background or wall papers. I just had an idea that I felt would be helpful for those who are using the images similarly as I do. My idea/request is, could the admins who are creating the content append the date for the image at the end of the original image name? For today's image for example it could be named NGC55_HaLRGBpugh_APOD_21092018.jpg rather than simply NGC55_HaLRGpugh.jpg.

Let me know what you think and thank you all for your great work on APOD. You keep our days interesting.

Dan

Including the date is a good idea, but it would be better to put it at the beginning, and in yyyymmdd format. That would allow the files to naturally sort by date.

Thanks Chris. You're right. I've been renaming them myself that way.

After seeing the daily image for the first time a few hours ago, I've been exploring to see if there is a Subscribe option that would send the image to my email account, So far I haven't had much luck. Is this even a service that APOD provides? If someone would be so kind as to direct me to the proper URL, I would be most appreciative. Thank you.

I'm not sure these even work any more, but try these:

RSS Feed: http://apod.nasa.gov/apod.rss maintained by NASA ASD

I created a Chrome/Firefox Extension called "APOD By the Trav". It adds APOD as your new tab page with a number of (what I think) are cool features.

Chrome - https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... pdcmlfjcdj
Firefox - https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefo ... -the-trav/
MS Edge - https://microsoftedge.microsoft.com/add ... ngnlfipjdh
