Found Images: 2013 June

Have you seen a great image or video somewhere that you think would make a great APOD? Nominate it for APOD! Please post as much information here as you have about the image/video with a link to any source(s) for it you know of here, and the editors will take a look.

When posting the image itself, please do not post anything larger than a thumbnail here; please honor the copyright holder's copyright.

Please keep images under 400K, whether hotlinked or uploaded.

Adam Block has a great new image of a cluster of galaxies in Leo. The picture is too large for me to post as an image, so I'm posting it as a link instead.

Starsurfer, you've told me how to make an image smaller, but I've been too tired and busy to pay attention. Maybe you could make my image smaller, or post a version of Adam's image yourself?

Ann, Adam almost always has the image sized small enough for Asterisk on the page dedicated to the image, in this case, the page found here: http://skycenter.arizona.edu/gallery/Galaxies/NGC3842

If you right click on the image, you'll find a way to see the image's location (how varies with the browser); use that URL, ending in .jpg, rather than clicking through to the larger image.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for checking out the latest image(s)!

Concerning the sizes... unfortunately the website I use creates a temporary resized image that is not the one I really wish to be displayed/published (it is generally too small).

So when you visit the page http://skycenter.arizona.edu/gallery/Galaxies/NGC3842
Clicking on this image *IS* the small version... namely http://skycenter.arizona.edu/sites/skyc ... n3842s.jpg
(note how this does not have "temp"). The APOD site can then resize my correctly formatted image for its own page.

My very large image is accessible by using the thumbnail that is beneath the image. In this case it links to:

Since this is not cropped or reduced very much, I think you will enjoy scrolling around the image.

I tried to pass this information on to Danielle as well.

Thanks, Adam. APOD doesn't use the small image from an Asterisk post as the source for the image it displays unless that's the only one available (which to my knowledge has not happened yet); it always uses larger files.

Thanks! Yes, I understand. The comment was with respect to images published here in the discussion groups (observation deck) for the latest images or like at the beginning of this thread.

Looks like owlice beat me to it! In fact, the image is small enough to post with img2 tags! To post an image:

For Internet Explorer:
1. Right click on image and click on Properties.
2. If the size is less than 400k, it can be posted using img2 tags.
3. The Properties window also displays the URL of the direct image JPG file, copy this and post it between the img2 tags.

For Firefox:
1. Right click on image and click on View Image Info.
2. If the size is less than 400k, it can be posted using img2 tags.
3. The View Image Info window also displays the URL of the direct image JPG file, copy this and post it between the img2 tags.
4. It is also easier to find the direct image URL in Firefox. You can right click on an image and then click View Image. This shows only the image on the page and displays the JPEG address in the main address bar of the browser.

Lately there seems to be a lot of NOAO images of large ancient planetary nebulae. Data must have been taken for these for a new large study of planetary nebulae interacting with the ISM. I wonder who the principal investigator is? :?:

What I really like about this widefield is the framing, instead of being centred on NGC 1316, it is framed a little to the side and includes many other interesting galaxies. Isn't the universe awesome?!! :D :D

This image is a scaled-down version of a full-circle view which combined nearly 900 images taken by NASA's Curiosity Mars rover. The Full-Res TIFF and JPEG provided in the top right legend are smaller resolution versions of the 1.3 billion pixel version for easier browser viewing and downloading. Viewers can explore the full-circle image with pan and zoom controls at http://mars.nasa.gov/bp1/.

The view is centered toward the south, with north at both ends. It shows Curiosity at the "Rocknest" site where the rover scooped up samples of windblown dust and sand. Curiosity used three cameras to take the component images on several different days between Oct. 5 and Nov. 16, 2012.

This first NASA-produced gigapixel image from the surface of Mars is a mosaic using 850 frames from the telephoto camera of Curiosity's Mast Camera instrument, supplemented with 21 frames from the Mastcam's wider-angle camera and 25 black-and-white frames -- mostly of the rover itself -- from the Navigation Camera. It was produced by the Multiple-Mission Image Processing Laboratory (MIPL) at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

This version of the panorama retains "raw" color, as seen by the camera on Mars under Mars lighting conditions. A white-balanced version is available at PIA16918. The view shows illumination effects from variations in the time of day for pieces of the mosaic. It also shows variations in the clarity of the atmosphere due to variable dustiness during the month while the images were acquired.

This image serendipitously captured a new supernova in this galaxy that has now been confirmed as a true supernova and given the official designation of SN 2013dc. Best of all, the discovery has been credited to Adam Block, his first ever supernova discovery! Congratulations to Adam and his amazing perseverance, you've come a long way since those Kitt Peak days! :D
