Snow Moon for a Snowy Planet
Explanation: The alarmingly tall
inhabitants of this small, snowy planet cast long shadows in bright moonlight. Of course, the snowy planet is actually planet Earth and the wide-angle mosaic, shown as a
little planet projection, was recorded on February 25 during the long
northern night of the
Full Snow Moon. The second brightest celestial beacon is Jupiter, on the right above the little planet's horizon. Lights near Östersund, Sweden glow along the horizon, surrounding the snow covered
lake Storsjön. The photographer reports that the journey out onto the frozen lake by sled to capture the
evocative Full Snow Moon scene was accompanied by ice sounds, biting cold, and a moonlit mist.

A great APOD! The image is charming and beautiful, the text is great, and it even comes with the perfect poem for the occasion!

Wow, this is really stunning. Not only aesthetically, but also technically. I really wonder how they did the initial panaorama (and especially the nadir shot) whithout disrupting the snow too much. Well done!

I nearly missed the link to the poem from the Apod (
evocative). I hadn't come across this poem before - you would think that de la Mare had seen this image, wouldn't you?

Less seriously, you at APOD are really just getting us ready for what we’ll be seeing when that roaming black hole zips past us accelerating us to nearly the speed of light.
That inspires a truly bad poem to go along with my bad astronomy:
The Black Hole Cometh
By : SA Squash
As the mighty black hole cometh
The folks on Earth were greatly bummed
Before their eyes the sky did change
Twisted, stretched, squished and maimed
As for our New now, where and when
What us here on Earth were needing
Is a better clock, map and compass
To show us where in hell it’s leading
When the sky turned red and mean
Wormholes, spirals, the jets shot by
Bending, turning, the knots unfold
To find us at the pot of gold
