Future Astronomer

Post by Orca » Tue Feb 19, 2013 6:07 am

Heya folks, long time no post..

My daughter is now 18 months. She is quickly learning to use not only singular words but also combinations..."honey bee," "kitty cat," "all done," and one of my favorites: "all right!"

I just thought I would share a couple of her new words that are relevant to this board. For months she has confidently pointed to the moon (in books as well as the real thing) and said "moon!" Even more impressive, I've taught her another astronomical object. I tested her one night on the way from the car to the house, pointing at Jupiter and asking her, "what's that?" She replied, "Joopitah!" Just about brought a tear to my eye. Granted, a few early attempts sounded more like "Joopatoo," but hey, that was at around 15 months or so. Pretty good I'd say!

Oh, and Owlice, her favorite animal says, "hooo, hooo!"

Orca!! Hi hi hi!!!

Good for your daughter (and wow... 18 months old already?! Where does the time go??!), and good for you, for she wouldn't be saying "Joopitah!" if she didn't have someone around to say it first!! And whether "Joopatoo!" or "Joopitah!," it's fabulous that she's on the path to sky knowledge!

Isn't it fun? Language acquisition is just fascinating to witness. I kept a list of my son's new words for a while; it was just astounding to me how much and how quickly his vocabulary grew!

Clearly she is a very smart, well-reasoning child, since her favorite animal says, "hooo, hooo!" :owl: :ssmile:
