Matijevic Hill Panorama

Explanation: On January 25 (UT) 2004, the Opportunity rover fell to Mars, making today the 9th anniversary of its landing. After more than 3,200 sols (Mars solar days) the golf cart-sized robot from Earth is still actively exploring the Red Planet, though its original mission plan was for three months. Having driven some 35 kilometers (22 miles) from its landing site, Opportunity's panoramic camera recorded the segments of this scene, in November and December of last year. The digitally stitched panorama spans more than 210 degrees across the Matijevic Hill area along the western rim of Endeavour Crater. Features dubbed Copper Cliff, a dark outcrop, appear at the left, and Whitewater Lake, a bright outcrop, at the far right. The image is presented here in a natural color approximation of what the scene would look like to human eyes.

When I see those panoramas of the Martian surface, they remind me of Burroughs' Barsoom books. I must have read them half a dozen times as a youngster.

Opportunity's longevity is very impressive. Well done to those who have shared in it's design, construction and operation.

What did you think of the Movie "John Carter" then Stephen?

The movie was sartorially inaccurate. As every reader of those books knew, the characters wore no clothes. (For a kick Google images of Dejah Thoris.)

And Burroughs was right! To this day there are no clothed Martians.

Brave little robot. I'm glad the apod editors are remembering Opportunity's anniversary today (although we should note that this is Opportunity's ninth anniversary in terms of Earth-years; it's been on Mars less than five Mars-years). Congratulations to the ground crew who have been living on Mars time, staying up 40 Earth-minutes later every day. Is there a word for the sort of jet-lag and disconnection from everybody else on Earth this schedule causes?

I noticed the markings on the tan soil; (rock) what looks like trails! Notice the curvature of these? Seems like cracks of fissures would run more straight of jagged! From swirling water; maybe?

I went to the link you gave (http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/14C.html) but I don't understand what you mean. Which image is at the far right? There is no image there?

"Far right" in the description is the far right of the APOD image itself, which is a panorama. If you scroll it to the far right you'll see the "bright outcrop" that is referred to. The page linked to after that is where you can read about the natural colour of the scene on Mars.

Make sure you click on the main image in order to see the entire panorama. The image on the page is just a crop of the central part. The link is simply to a page that explains how natural colors on Mars are determined.
