Outters4, a newly discovered giant (planetary ?) nebula

Here is a photograph of Outters4 (OU4), a giant nebula hidden in Sharpless 129, recently discovered by Nicolas Outters (http://www.outters.fr/images%20site%20a ... OU4-eu.pdf). OU4 is mostly emitting in the OIII line and is very large (1.2° wide) but very faint compared to the Ha signal of Sharpless 129. The nature of this nebula is not yet clarified and subject to observation from professional astronomers these days [Publication: http://www.outters.fr/images%20site%20a ... 2477v1.pdf ].
Common name : Giant Squid nebula, credit to Nicolas !
Acquisition: FSQ106 refractor at f/3.6 , camera Atik 4000, 4h20 Ha, 7h20 OIII and 2h50 RGB.

You can see the landscape of Graz – The Schlossberg - (literally means “castle mountain”)– a 120m hill toped by a castle. A little bit more right on the hill is the "Uhrturm" (clock tower) which functions as a recognisable icon for the city. Remarkably, the clock's handles have opposite roles to the common notion. That is, the larger one marks hours while the smaller is for minutes. This is due to the fact that originally only the larger handle was there to point out hours and display of minutes was only added later. In the foreground is the the modern island “Murinsel” where you can drink coffee or take a break on the river Mur.

I made 220 pictures to 30secondes.

SH2-115: Emission nebula in Cygnus

The nebula was discovered on 1784 September 5 by William Herschel. He described the western end of the nebula as "Extended; passes thro' 52 Cygni... near 2 degree in length", and described the eastern end as "Branching nebulosity... The following part divides into several streams uniting again towards the south."

A Smile in the Sky

The other day I got off work from the zoo and had the pleasure of capturing my very first circumzenithal arc!

I have actually retired from commenting on pictures in the Recent Submissions threads, but I can't resist a particular picture here. Before I comment on that one, however, let me thank everyone else for their splendid contributions here! It's such a joy to look at your great photos! (Rothko, you were on line when I started to write this... what splendid sunsets (sunrises?) you have photographed!)

But I really want to talk about Stephane Zoll's picture of Outters4, a newly discovered faint OIII-emitting nebula inside relatively bright Ha-emitting nebula Sharpless 129. What a fascinating nebula! Is it a planetary nebula? It looks rather like it, but if so, where is the central star? The nebula is centered on a bright blue star, which is, however, not the kind of star you find inside planetary nebulae. The star, HD 202214, is classified alternatively as B0V, B0IV, B0II and O9. My software suggests a V light luminosity of about 8,000 times that of the Sun. The spectral class and V light luminosity makes HD 202214 too cool and bright to be the central star of a planetary nebula. On the other hand, HD 202214 is clearly a remarkable star in itself. Its temperature and V luminosity appears to be comparable to that of great star Alnitak in Orion's Belt, but since Alnitak appears to be farther along in its evolution than HD 202214, the latter star might become a brighter blue star than Alnitak.

My point is that a hot massive star like HD 202214 might possibly have some sort of outburst or its own, just because it is so massive. Particularly if it is at the end of its main sequence lifetime, which seems likely. But HD 202214 also has a companion. My software seems to contradict itself as to how bright the companion is compared with HD 202214 itself. But if the companion is faint, isn't it possible that the companion is in fact a small hot star which has produced a planetary nebula?
