Starship Asterisk*

I'm interested in sampling some Asteriskian musics. Here's some of mine. This is not a thread for disparaging anyone's taste in music. Hopefully everyone can just share their favorites and perhaps some banter. To post music just search for it on YouTube and embed it here. Chances are it's there.

I'll start with some space themed stuff. I listen to a lot of soundtracks.

Here's something that has been appearing in a lot of space videos lately. You've probably heard it but had no idea where it came from.

Actually I have a large range of music that I like; depending on my mood! I even like Mozart!

This is our favorite group- we see them live several times a year. Dakota Blonde performing Mary's Waltz.
It doesn't get better than this, two of the best of the best. John Prine and Iris Dement performing In Spite of Ourselves.
This should give anybody goosebumps, K.D. Lang singing Hallelujah; even better, I think than Leonard Cohen's version, although his is also amazing.

I've always thought KD Lang is an amazing vocalist. I'm sorry, but the nasal twang of John Prine and Iris DeMent remind me of why I hated my father's country music when I was growing up. I love the vocal harmonies of Dakota Blonde. Mary Huckins' voice reminds of Melanie Safka, though the slight nasal quality detracts somewhat from an otherwise beautiful voice.

Better than _The Pianist_ version & much better than I can plunk out.

I'm not fond of traditional country music, either (a little goes a long way). But I hear a different kind of timbre in these voices... something that gives them real personality and uniqueness; something missing in so many singers. Also, my musical tastes run to melody and lyrics, and both Prine and DeMent are masters of both.

In any case, musical tastes are obviously wide. I wanted to limit my post to three selections, which was very difficult. I picked Dakota Blonde not just because they're my favorite, but because it's likely nobody else around here knows them. Prine and DeMent are well known in some circles, but perhaps still unfamiliar to most people. K.D. Lang is quite famous, of course, but my selection shows how a cover can sometimes exceed the original, how a person can really own a song.

I've been wondering how to participate in this thread. I like almost every kind of music and have been influenced by many different styles of music. So I decided to showcase that breadth of interest. You have been warned.

We'll start off slow with a song I listened to hundreds of times as a child, on our 45 rpm record player that plugged into the back of our desk radio. It was a red disk!
Then we'll segue into a calming yet dramatic bit of classical music that has been used to good effect in films and TV shows, most recently I think in Master and Commander, starring Russell Crowe and some other guys.
And we'll end, appropriately, with a little death metal.

Among the composition of Classical music, I like the music of the italian composer Antonio Vivaldi.
Vivaldi composed from the heart, his music better expresses human nature.
Apart from " Four Seasons", Vivaldi has many very fine works.

I never tire of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, of Beethoven's Sixth Symphony, of Copland's Appalachian Spring. Oh, and Borodin's In the Steppes of Central Asia.

Owlice, that's some range of music From classical, to "Cows Have Guns", which is 'utterly' enjoyable, especially the 'chicken rescue', at the end

Haha, owlice, I expected nothing but classical music from you. I feel like I can't fully appreciate classical music because I lack musical education. I kind of think of soundtracks as an evolution classical music but I may be wrong.

geckzilla, classical composers write soundtracks; time-honored activity for them. I have the Nyman work on CD; I like it, too. Piano music is my first love; that was my instrument growing up. (I took lessons on other instruments, too, to even less effect.) I had good luck with choral singing as an adult and got to sing with some excellent orchestras/conductors/in great venues. (Also some lesser orchestras/conductors/venues... ) So there's a bit of vocal music in the house, too, and I'm sure you know some of it, such as:
(Gee, that hall looks familiar.)

A lot of people come to classical music in adulthood and get their musical education from listening, liner notes, books, and online; I used to post, and read!, a lot on classical music boards. I still belong to one but don't post there very often anymore.

I just found last year Ulrich Schnauss and Brian Eno(producer of several U2 albuns)

Wasn't originally intended to be just for that song but it's how it ended up.

Also, loading the thread is bogging down my computer. I wonder if it has something to do with the new way YouTube videos are getting embedded or if it's more to do with the new Firefox or something I've got going on on my computer?

No problem here (also using Firefox). I can't play the videos without them stuttering and getting ahead of the buffering, but the overall page loads very fast- much faster than the new images pages, for instance.

This thread loads very slowly for me (also using Firefox) especially through my usual network, so I haven't been reading it. (I have a faster network available to me at the moment.)
