Sharpless 2-54, NGC 6625, NGC 6604, LDN 408
Copyright: Data: DSS 2, 12 tiles 60x60 arcminutes each; Registar, Image Plus 4.50A and PS CS4; processing, Gilles Chapdelaine

Sharpless 2-54 is rarely pictured by amateurs probably because of the presence of M 16 right down below which outshines the more obscur Sharpless nebula.
To complete this 12 tiles mosaïc and merging RGB colors I used Registar and the rest of processing had been done with Image Plus and PS. The open cluster NGC 6625
could be located easily with the bright blue star at the left of the picture but other star belonging to this cluster are difficult to determine. LDN 408 is a dark nebula
right at the left border of the image. NGC 6604 is located down below the brightest part of Sharpless 2-54. Should I mention that the original in .tiff made 371 Mo.

Cheers
Gilles

Lunar Refraction 2012-01-28

The Sun and Moon usually get "squashed" when they approach the horizon, but I've never seen the either orb flatten as much as it did last Saturday night:

Image

The wide angle at bottom is taken with a 55mm lens when the Moon is a degree or so off the horizon. The upper photos are ate 300mm with the Moon touching and then below the horizon. The crescent is badly distorted and flattened!

For more info on refraction, read this page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atmospheric_refraction

Lunar X

This is a famous "optical feature" on the Moon, which appears like the letter "X" when the terminator is at an optimal position. The illusion of the "X" is created by sunlight falling on the rims/ridges between the craters La Caille, Blanchinus, and Purbach. The "X" is observable for about 4 hours just prior to the Lunar First Quarter.
