Stereo Helene

Explanation: Get out your red/blue glasses and float next to Helene, small, icy moon of Saturn. Appropriately named, Helene is one of four known Trojan moons, so called because it orbits at a Lagrange point. A Lagrange point is a gravitationally stable position near two massive bodies, in this case Saturn and larger moon Dione. In fact, irregularly shaped ( about 36 by 32 by 30 kilometers) Helene orbits at Dione's leading Lagrange point while brotherly ice moon Polydeuces follows at Dione's trailing Lagrange point. The sharp stereo anaglyph was constructed from two Cassini images (N00172886, N00172892) captured during the recent close flyby. It shows part of the Saturn-facing hemisphere of Helene mottled with craters and gully-like features.

Actually i can see it better without the red/blue glasses, but then i can't stick my hand inside of it. It's kinda neat. I tried looking side to side and it followed me. That 3-D effect can be really .I'd give it a thumbs up, if there was a 'thumb' smilie. :insert hint smilie here:

Very well done. This is the first 3d image that actually looked like it was sticking out from my monitor. I actually found myself, trying to get up higher to see deeper into the crate in the upper left.

Interesting shaped moon. The shape reminds me of an animals head! I liked the 3D effect.

I finally broke down and ordered a set of red/cyan, red/blue and red/green 3D glasses - thanks for the link to suppliers of such.

Soon, soon I'll be able to peer into those nooks-n-cranies ....

The face that is nearest to this perspective looks to have been cleaved flat. The trails on it are pointing to the center of gravity that is the middle of the face pointing toward the camera

That would be nice, but remember that the editors are just that... editors. They don't produce the images. So the request should be to people who like producing anaglyphs, that they might also produce stereo pair versions (it's trivial to do). Some APOD anaglyphs have had links to different versions. But in the end, it all depends on the person submitting the image.

It's a great 3D effect. I never have been able to master the cross-eyed method to see 3D so I find the red/blue glasses way to be simple and easy on the eyes.

PS. What is the Technorati Claim Code: 9CN8HGUDKM3X in this APOD (or should I not ask!).

Nobody has yet answered my query so I assume everyone knows what it means and cannot believe that I don't know (or possibly nobody knows what it means!) but I shall ask again just what does the "Technorati Claim Code: 9CN8HGUDKM3X" that is still with this APOD mean. I would be grateful if someone could please let me know. Thanks.

Technorati is a way to rank blogs; the claim code had to be put on one page to show that the person registering the APOD site was indeed responsible for that site. Being able to measure the relative success of APOD in the science blog category can be of practical assistance to APOD in the future.

Thanks owlice for your reply, which is greatly appreciated. I am still somewhat unsure as to exactly what Technorati is but I presume the APOD editors/authors are those who register the APOD site and that 9CN8HGUDKM3X is therefore the code for the APOD. If so though why does that code not appear on every APOD, at least since Technorati started (whenever that was). I'm clearly not keeping up with things like I should! Confused but still ing.

I believe it has to appear just once, to confirm that the site belongs to the registrant.

David, there's always Google, you know! The first thing I did when I saw the claim code was Google Technorati. Indeed, Googling "what is technorati" brings up a page which tells one what Technorati is.

Prizes would be nice, wouldn't they? If I ever get around to making the Asterisk tee-shirts I have in mind (and supplies) to make, we might even be able to offer prizes!
