It's an unsolved problem. But that isn't to say there aren't good ideas on the matter. Probably most solar physicists believe the heating is produced by collapsing electric currents in the corona, those currents being induced by the Sun's magnetic field. Many also implicate various energy transport mechanisms from beneath the photosphere, such as sound or radio waves.

Why would the electric currents have to collapse ? Would not the electric currents themselves that encircle the magnetic field lines create heat due to the resistance while passing through the plasma environment ?

No, there wouldn't be nearly enough energy dissipation to provide the necessary heating.

So the magnetic field lines fluctuate in strength thereby collapsing and re-collapsing the electric currents which should cause the most heat energy. Heat is produced by the transfer of charge over time through a potential difference. Is this idea correct ?
