http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liverwurst wrote: <<Liverwurst, is an anglicisation of the German Leberwurst, literally meaning "liver sausage". It is a typical sausage served in Germany, Hungary, Serbia, Slovenia, the Netherlands, Finland and Sweden.

Most liverwurst varieties are spreadable. The sausage is usually made with pork. Only about 10-20% of the sausage is actually pork liver, which is enough to give it a distinctive liver taste. Other ingredients are meat, fat, and spices such as ground black pepper, marjoram, allspice, thyme, ground mustard seed or nutmeg. Recently more exotic additions such as cowberries and mushrooms have gained in popularity.

Liverwurst is mostly eaten as is, without further cooking. It is often served in traditional sandwiches or on open-faced sandwiches. It is popular in North America with red onion and mustard on a rye or whole grain bread. In Germany, in the South and West liverwurst is served with slices of gherkin pickled with sugar, vinegar and mustard seeds, and in the Northeast, it is served with gherkins pickled with salt and dill are the usual addition.>>

Art, could you expound a bit on the 'nervous sausage' remark?

<<Ladle Rat Rotten Hut is the story of Little Red Riding Hood written using English words, but never the correct ones, in the genre called homophonic transformation. In "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut", a single word replaces several in the correct version (e.g., "evanescent" from "if it isn't"), and sometimes several words replace one longer word ("on forger nut" for "unfortunate"). Every word can be found in most collegiate dictionaries, with the exception of "icer" (which is in Merriam-Webster's Unabridged).

Howard L. Chace, a professor of French at Miami University, wrote it in 1940 to demonstrate that the intonation of spoken English is almost as important to the meaning as the words themselves. Although written with a serious purpose in mind, the story's humorous aspects cannot be ignored, especially with Chace's additions of phrases not in the traditional story ("A nervous sausage bag ice!" for "I never saw such big eyes!") and the abrupt, non-traditional ending. It was first published in Gene Sherman's "Cityside" column in the Los Angeles Times in 1953, reprinted in the San Francisco Chronicle and in the first issue of Sports Illustrated in 1954. After Arthur Godfrey read "Ladle Rat Rotten Hut" on one of his programs, the heightened interest led to the publication of Chace's stories and nursery rhymes in Anguish Languish (Prentice-Hall, 1956).>>

Thanks for the Ladle Rat Rotten Hut link, Art! :D :D :D :D :D

It made me hungry, too. I think I'll go and have myself a typical Swedish open sandwich with liverwurst spread and some gherkin pickled with vinegar, sugar and mustard seeds. Yummy!!!

What's that, Mommy? You want me to stop talking to myself? You want me to come in and help you do the dishes, clean the stove and sweep the floor? Yes, in a minute, I'll just... I'll just go and pick some flowers for you first, okay, Mommy? Stop tickling me, Art! Stop tickling me! Stop tickling me! Stop tickling me!!! Stop... Ooops, is that you, Mommy?
