GZOD: Cosmic Cuttlefish
GZOD: Cosmic Cuttlefish
Stellar190 got fascinated by NGC 1142, and wrote a whole Galaxy Zoo Object of the Day on it, stardate 27th October, 2010.
This image is her own version of the SDSS data, made by downloading the FITS data and playing working with the free astro-imaging software DS9.
But why a cuttlefish? Stellar190: "Why have I called it the Cosmic Cuttlefish? I spoke to my Gran about the galaxy and we were trying to work out if it looked more like a squid or a cuttlefish. I settled for a cuttlefish "
Re: GZOD: Cosmic Cuttlefish
Oh, I've been searching like crazy to find this galaxy!!!
I knew I had seen it before, and I even found it when I googled "interacting galaxies" - except I couldn't open the page where I could find information the galaxy, or see it more highly resolved!
Well, thanks for giving me the address to Halton Arp's galaxy. That's where I found it. It is Arp 118, or NGC 1141 and 1142.
I think the Galaxy Zoo picture of Arp 118 looks better than the one I found by googling!
