The Volcano under the Milky Way
http://www.lucperrot.fr/apod/volcano_un ... y_way.html
Copyright: Luc Perrot Date: 06/07/2010
Location: Piton de la Fournaise / Reunion Island
Technique: Assembly of 3 photos Fish Eye. Lighting with gas lamp

I imagined for a long time this photo before being able to realize it. It was not easy to combine simultaneously all the parameters below:
- Get a good positioning of the Milky Way arched just over the Piton de la Fournaise
- No moon to get a beautiful starry sky
- Good weather without clouds and without fog, which is rarely the case on this east side of the island exposed to the winds at 2200 m
- Be available at the right time

After several failed attempts, on this July 6th the conditions seem finally favorable. In the twilight, I went down alone with my equipment in the “enclos Fouqué” (enclosure), the caldera formed by the Piton de la Fournaise. It is cold, about 2°c ( 35°f), the wind is icy but the motivation is there. After 30 minutes of walking, of which 20 is the abrupt descent, I reach the bottom of the enclosure. Some location checks to obtain the best possible composition, then tests to assess the proper exposure and it’s finally time for the shooting session.

What a strange feeling of being alone in the dark in the middle of this deserted caldera, only lit by the magic sparkling of our Milky Way.

In the foreground of this photo we can observe in old lava flows between which grows some “Branle vert” (Erica reunionensis), an endemic species of Reunion and typical of this part of the island. In the background stands the silhouette of the “Piton de la Fournaise” and on both sides, the limits of the “enclos Fouqué.”

In the sky: to the left, center of the Milky Way and Antares above. To the right, Alpha and Beta Centauri, the South Cross and the Carina Nebula. Below and slightly to the right the Small and Large Magellanic Cloud.

Since 1st August, the National Park of Reunion which covers 40 % of the island is registered on the UNESCO world heritage. The "Piton de la Fournaise" is situated in the heart of this park.

That's a wonderful image, Luc Perrot! And thank you for describing all the work that went into taking it!

View of Spain from Near Space
Credit: Daedalus Project, Campus Party, Sondas Espaciales, Astroidea

This photo is not from a satellite or space station in orbit above the earth. This photo taken on July 30th 2010 was made aboard a sounding balloon over an altitude of 32593 meters by a team of amateur astronomers and robotic hobbyists participating at Campus Party, an annual science and technology event taking place in several countries around the world. The probe was named as "Near Space One".

In this image we can see the east of Spain (the river Jucar and Valencia) and the Mediterranean Sea. In the background a very dimly perceived Ibiza and Palma de Mallorca, the two main islands of the archipelago of the Balearic Islands.
