This one shows the Earth at night; may be useful to combine with the daytime view now used to show the NSL locations.

Noah,

Yes, in fact we used to use the "Earth at Night" image as the world map, but changed to the present one because it shows day and night and the current clouds.

Oddly, I wrote the text on the left of that page, as it is copied right from APOD. I think it is used illegally -- I never gave space.com permission to use that text, but since I am not a lawyer or the police there is little I can do. Here is a link to that APOD: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040822.html
older versions: http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap020810.html , http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap001127.html

http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap040822.html contains link http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/lib/ab ... ml#srapply that sais that NASA images are in public domain, and guidelines to use them are at http://www.nasa.gov/audience/formedia/f ... lines.html

however, 60 words you wrote might be subject to copyright ;) bad thing is that they have modified them (hyperlinks removed, etc) so they might get away with 'fair use' in the court.

I believe that image is primarily DMSP and not NASA.
