That's an annoyingly narrow field of view they gave us. It'd be really, really neat if you could hover each individual line and find out some info about it, but alas. Even after I pieced it together, it seems it only has the most basic info available. There were also some lines missing in the lower right quadrant which I (somewhat messily) fixed.

I pieced it together
thanks. you might want to submit that for apod (but it may not make it due to some stinky copyright issues)

G'day

It's amazing how in just 50 years we have advanced to such an extent that MAN is planning to go where no man has gone before.

I am very surprised to see the distance along the bottom of the map defined in miles. Even the NG, staid old thing that it is, must know that science uses SI units.

Yeah, it depends on whether NG put it in zoomify format because they thought the masses would consume it better that way or because they were trying to prevent people from easily having the whole image. It could go either way.

Cool picture. The busy part of the picture, especially with the dithered moire effect from reducing the combined image to fit the screen, looks like test patterns or crop circles.

Heh, I have too much free time... after I mentioned that idea about highlighting each line as you hover it, I couldn't help but throw together something fairly quickly in Flash.
http://www.geckzilla.com/flash/circle_planets.swf
(you can move the two planets around, though I don't know why other than to show that the lines are dynamically generated)

That was a fun exercise. I don't know if I want to pretty much rip off the NG poster though so maybe I should just stop. :)
