M33 -Triangulum Galaxy

The Triangulum Galaxy is a spiral galaxy approximately 3 million light-years from Earth in the constellation Triangulum. It is catalogued as Messier 33 or NGC 598. The Triangulum Galaxy is the third-largest member of the Local Group of galaxies, behind the Milky Way and the Andromeda Galaxy. It is one of the most distant permanent objects that can be viewed with the naked eye.

The galaxy is the smallest spiral galaxy in the Local Group and it is believed to be a satellite of the Andromeda Galaxy due to their interactions, velocities, and proximity to one another in the night sky. It also has an H-II nucleus.

I’ve been staring at this for way too long so I just have to post it. This is my first image of the season after my vow this summer to take my imaging to the next level.

Viewed from the center of Tampa, FL. This is IC1396. The Elephants Trunk Nebula. It’s a BiColor image using 3nm H-alpha and Oxygen-III filters.

The nebula is 2400ly from the Earth and is HUGE in terms of size. I would need at least 6 frames to capture the entire nebula.

This image is 20 hours of 180 second Ha exposures, and 8 hours of 120 second exposures in OIII. For a combined total of 28 hours pointing at a single point in the sky, over multiple nights. 28 hours is a personal best for me. All of this data is compiled alongside 150 calibration images (to account for defects like street lights and dust on the sensor of the camera or telescope), to create one, single, final image ready to edit. Two attempts and 10-12 hours of editing later, I have my image. It’s also the first image I’ve taken through my new ES 127 APO.

HOPEFULLY, I’ve accomplished my goal this year in this image and will continue to do so, you be the judge.

I wanted to create some kind of black-yellow-black "Lunar flag" photo. This is an experimental image as using long exposure times I have always been preferring star stacking instead of one long shot. But with extreme telephoto lens the 1 - 1.5 second gaps between the frames would have been causing ugly discontinuity so the result is a single 12-minute-long frame.
