The Big Dipper above the Blue Star Spring in Yellowstone National Park.
Blue Star Spring is a pretty blue pool just behind Old Faithful. The dangerous (to all heavy footed life forms) sinter overhangs do make it look somewhat like a star. How cool is that?

Moon and Mercury.
This picture could be observed on September 19, 2017 shortly before sunrise. The finest lunar crescent in phase 0.01 and the planet Mercury, basking in the dawn colors, became close only 2° to each other. The height of the moon at the time of shooting did not exceed 3.5 ° above the horizon. You can also notice the barely perceptible Planetshine sinking in the rays of the rising Sun.

Out in the middle of Kansas farmland, where the trains and Milky Way roam at night. I knew when I saw the Milky Way on the side of the road after driving for nearly 2 hours through rain that I had to grab a photo before more clouds rolled in. Luckily an active rail line was perfectly facing the Milky Way where the clouds parted. I timed the oncoming trains to illuminate the rails as it was a mile down the tracks.

NGC 6960: The Witch's Broom Nebula Mosaic
copyright: Mark Hanson
Here is an image i have been working on for about the last 4 months, taken at Stellar Winds Observatory at DSNM, Animas, New Mexico .
Its of the western part of the Veil nebula often called the Witch's Broom nebula. This was quite a challenge seaming it all together as the bright 4.2 magnitude star fell very close to the edge of the frames. But all and all turned out great. So much to look at. Now to do the entire region... Just kidding
You can see more information and the full resolution version here:
https://www.hansonastronomy.com/cone-and-fox-fur-nebula No idea why its called this
Thanks,
Mark

Taken with a Canon EOS 350D lens 300mm/5.6 at 1/4000s. Untouched picture - no colour correction.
