The forecast for 19 December 2016 was for a grazing occultation of Regulus (Alpha Leonis) by the Moon for Melbourne, Australia at approximately 5.20am AEST. Regulus just below moon near terminator.

Perfect Circumscribed moon halo (and 22° ring halo)

These amazing halo displays were caused by diamond dust (ice crystals) that was blown over the mountains from fog / inversion nearby.

1. December 16th 2016, Fichtelberg (Germany), 3:23 (CET), moon height 53.6°







2. December 16th 2016, Klínovec (Czech Republic), 4:30 (CET), moon height 46.5°

Here you can see the moving ice crystals during the long time exposure. I've never seen such a perfect circumscription before.
