NGC 3344 - The Sliced Onion Galaxy

Spiral galaxy in Leo Minor that doesn't get much attention. This is a close up of the core processed from the Hubble Legacy Archives. I have done the image processing. It has 3 different blue wavelengths layered to bring out the star forming regions. I think the Hubble Team’s published image of this data set isn’t as well done as many others. Processing software was FITSLiberator and Photoshop.

That is such a lovely image, Doug! Thanks for processing the Hubble data and producing this delightful picture. NGC 3344 is of course a wonderfully graceful galaxy, starforming but serene.

I think your image is superior to the image that is generally found on the net, namely this one. Yours, among other things, has north up, although the one I linked to has a somewhat wider field of view. But your colors are better, because the arms of NGC 3344 are really dominated by blue stars. Also your image shows more detail in the nucleus.

NGC 1275 in Perseus.

This one's made the rounds of APOD since about 2005, I think, but it cycles back every 2 to 3 years like a periodic comet. My version of processing of Hubble Legacy Data is different than the other iterations that have been on APOD before. Not sure if it's better, just different.

The tide was not adequate, the phase of the moon either, but it did not matter, there is only one hour at year that can make this picture.

EARTH HOUR!!!

On any other night of the year the castle is illuminated by dozens of halogen spotlights.

It is a pity that we only have one hour between 3600 to contemplate Taurus, the Pleiades and Cassiopeia above the Castle of Santa Cruz.

M106 High resolution - Amateur/pro data by Andre van der Hoeven, on Flickr

This image shows a unique view of M106 in the highest resolution obtainable from Earth until now I think. The image was made with the 3.6m CFHT telescope in Hawaii, and data was combined with several professional and amateur sources. Extended info can be seen on the Flickr site. I would really recommend to look at the full resolution version (which is almost 25 Mp).

Tropical island dreaming

I was able to see the total Solar eclipse of 9th March 2016 from Pulau Plun, a small island less than a kilometer wide, which lies east of Halmahera island in eastern Indonesia. Apart from the pictures already shared in this thread, I also photographed this all-sky panorama of the eclipse. And here, I have the all-sky panorama of the eclipse sky, looking east.

This is from the first minute of 3 minutes 17 seconds of totality. According to the EXIF data, I shot the 6 individual pictures making this panorama in 27 seconds. Thankfully, one of the pictures was able to catch Venus in the sky as well. Before the totality began, the Sun mostly remained in view through the clouds in a way eclipse shades were not much needed. About 20 minutes before second contact, I was feeling confident enough that the eclipsed would be visible in some way, so-so, okay or good. Only after looking into this all-sky view I fully realise how difficult the conditions actually were.
