NGC 2014 & NGC 2020 in the LMaC

The Large Magellanic Cloud presents interesting objects which are usually seen in wide field pictures.
Well… here is a "close up" of two extra galactic pearls: Intriguing NGC 2020 a kind of open bubble generated by strong stellar winds from massive young stars and NGC 2014 a star forming region also known as Henize 55 with crowded Open Clusters arround the nebula

Herbig-Haro objects in the Pelican

Jets are an active, short-lived phase of star formation, lasting only about 100 000 years. They are called Herbig-Haro (HH) objects, named after George Herbig and Guillermo Haro, who studied the outflows in the 1950's. Astronomers still don’t know what role jets play in the star formation process or exactly how the star unleashes them.

Although Herbig–Haro (HH) objects come in a wide array of shapes, the basic configuration is usually the same. Twin jets of heated gas, ejected in opposite directions from a forming star, stream through interstellar space.

In the Pelican Nebula several Herbig-Haro objects can be found. Recently I bought pixinsight and reprocessed some older data from the Pelican. It showed that 7 HH objects can be seen on this image. It's clear this is a star-forming region....

Large version here.

This is a still from my latest timelapse video, Namibian Nights. The video won First Prize at the recent Travel Photographer of the Year Awards.

The image was shot in the South of Namibia. The light on the trees and rocks was created with little flashlights. The orange glow at the horizon is light pollution from a village.

This was the sight that greeted us at the nearby small town of Örsundsbro in southern Sweden as we made our way back early Saturday morning (04.24 CET) from the Uppsala Amateur Astronomy (http://www.uaa.nu) observatory. During the night the temperature dropped from -10 to about -25 degrees Celcius as a weather front moved in. After a some hours of clear skies this weather front started creating ice crystals that caused both a haze that covered the entire sky and a glittering ground level "fog" that together made further observations and tests fruitless so we quit for the night. We were however treated to this display on our way home. The crystals however disappeared soon after we left Örsundsbro so we couldn't try our luck closer to the larger town of Uppsala.

This delicate emission nebula is located in the constellation of Canis Major at a distance of about 15,000 light years. The nebula is illuminated by a central star in its last stage of life. This is a massive so called Wolf-Rayet star which is shedding its outer layers of gas at an extremely high rate due to intense radiation pressure. Wolf-Rayet stars are thought to represent a brief stage of evolution near the end of life for giant super massive stars - the last unstable phase before the star explodes as a brilliant supernova.
In the case of Thor's Helmet a large expanding bubble has formed around the bright central star. Interaction with giant molecular clouds in the area have contributed to the overall intricate shape of the nebula and large bow shock structures radiate out from the bubble in several directions. The nebula is some 30 light years in diameter and the strong blue-green colour is due to OIII emission near the star.
This entire spectacle lies embedded in a dense star field consisting of thousands of coloured jewels each casting their own contrasting light onto this dramatic interstellar scenery.
