Something to do with their physiology, maybe? It could either limit their movement mechanically by pressing on certain muscles or tendons or it could be like a reflex. Either way, I really doubt it's the cat simply "giving up" as the posted video suggests. Hehe

It reminded me of the way that a hen can be immobilised by putting it on its back.
http://www.zyra.tv/hypnocx.htm

But it is probably linked to the automatic kitten-immobilisation by mother cat. A vet shows this here:

PS. IS it possible to embed non-YouTube and non-Vimeo videos?

I had a Manchester Terrier when I was young. He was like that with a leash. He had a halter he wore all the time with his tags. As soon as you attached a leash, it was like you had attached a boat anchor.

That was hard to watch. The poor cat! The owners should be smacked with a rolled-up newspaper.

Or have their noses rubbed in something unpleasant?

Off thread - Owlice, do you recall the baby blackbird Paul and I rescued from our cat a while back? Well, we now have a very handsome adult male blackbird who has decided that THIS terrace and THIS lemon tree is HIS preserve. I think the cats are deciding that he is too forceful to confront. So they keep firmly asleep when he is charging around and yelling his dominance.

Is that "Honey I supersized the kid" or "Honey I shrank the observatory"

Open W-I-D-E and say Ahhhhhhh while sticking out your tongue, says the big kid, playing doctor.

Thanks for posting the heartwarming cat rescue story, geckzilla. And the giant baby girl and the dwarf observatory were fun, too.

We need more cuteness here, particularly the feline kind. So here goes:

This nine minute clip from a South African documentary might best be classified as "heart-warming" rather than cute. But I love it!

Ugh, I started to watch the "documentary" that clip is from. It's about a woman who really believes she is able to communicate with animals through psychic powers. I think communication with animals is a very interesting subject but the idea that she is using telepathy is a complete and utter crock.

I assumed that whatever it is she seems to do is related to this kind of "horse whispering" thing that an Argentinian gaucho does:

That horse is specially trained. Anna Breytenbach claims to be able to send mental images to animals and receive back responses. They also seem to send her emotions. The documentary is designed to make the viewer believe this is possible. I think it's very much a sham much like a fortune teller supposedly uses a crystal ball to view images.

Hmm... Then the leopard, being a very good actor, was also in on the conspiracy.

Or at least the subject of a lot of wishful thinking on the part of his human caretakers.

That would be a good description of the relationship between a lot of humans and their pets. :)
