NGC 4889 (also known as Caldwell 35, Coma Berenices) is a class-4 supergiant elliptical galaxy.

At the core of the galaxy is a supermassive black hole that heats up the intracluster medium through the action of friction from infalling gases and dust. The X-ray emission from the galaxy extends out to several million light years of the cluster.

As the largest and the most massive galaxy easily visible to Earth, NGC 4889 has played an important role in both amateur and professional astronomy, and has become a prototype in studying the dynamical evolution of other supergiant elliptical galaxies in the more distant universe.

Light Pillars from Hickory Run State Park Pennsylvania

Posted: Thu Mar 17, 2016 4:14 pm
by leisurelyscientist
Light pillars captured this morning, March 17, 2016 from Hickory Run State Park, Pennsylvania. While out taking some wide field images of Mars and Saturn, I spotted these interesting light pillars looking to the east, there are several towns and a ski slope in that direction. I thought the color patterns were interesting. The formation of light pillars comes from ice crystals in the atmosphere reflecting light. Tech Specs: Canon 6D, Canon EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM lens, ISO 3200, 6 seconds at f/2.8, tripod mounted.
