I wouldn't say "overloaded", just that some have more than one name (like "period" and "full stop"). But while a few glyphs have more than one name, some of them have many different uses.

To correct myself, it looks like the dot-operator is defined in the set of unicode Mathematical Operators (U+2200–U+22FF) as U+22C5 (if you can find a font which supports it).
