In these Calcium K (ultraviolet light) images Joe Sullivan of San Diego, California compares one of the most recent large active regions. The image of AR 1944 was taken on January 5, 2014. AR 1944 rotated around the sun and reemerged as AR 1967 approximately one month later and was captured again on February 2, 2014.

Fascinating animation, Fredrik. I tried to look at the high resolution version, but when I clicked on the link there was no picture there.

The last image in the series looks colorless. Can you tell me if that is a single filter image, or if it was made using the same filters as the other images in the series?

Ann

The great Horse Head Nebula
Based on observations made with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, and obtained from the Hubble Legacy Archive, which is a collaboration between the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI/NASA), the Space Telescope European Coordinating Facility (ST-ECF/ESA) and the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre (CADC/NRC/CSA).

I want to thank Judy Schmidt for the great help.

Thank you!

Hmm, thats odd. It should show up for everyone with the link. Try out this link: https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/DWeYC ... 1l406SgE68
If that also fails, try http://www.astrobin.com/76658/ .

Unfortunately different filters were used throughout the observations, so it was not possible to maintain the same colors throughout the animation without extensive 'photoshopping' . The first images were using 814w/606w/435w nm for R/G/B respectively, while the last ones only had 814nm and 606nm wide-filters. So no filter that covers the blue part of the spectrum.

On the morning of February 6th, 2014 the comets C2012 X1 (LINEAR) and C2013 R1 (LOVEJOY) were at about 2° apart from each other. This is quite a rare case of apparent approaching of two comets. This 2 panel mosaic displays them at 3:40 UT.

Another aurora outburst!!

Leaving Fairbanks for Hong Kong today, over 9 nights we stay here, it was only cloudy for 2 nights, and aurora can be seen on all 7 nights of different level, and we are very very lucky that we experienced 2 aurora outbursts.

See below 4 frames showing the aurora changes from 04:58-05:57 this morning.
