ESO: Rare Lightning Instead of Stars Above Paranal
The sky above Paranal Observatory in Chile, home of the Very Large Telescope, is normally covered with millions of stars.
However yesterday night, the first time in many years, a thunderstorm passed along the nearby coast. Strong flashes of
lightning painted for a fraction of seconds beautiful and impressive lines in the sky above the telescopes. An hour later it was all gone.

At the left corner a coastal part of the Atacama Desert is illuminated by lightning and a small band of clear sky with a single star
(now identified as Procyon) is seen.

This picture shows the huge region of hydrogen clouds in Cygnus.
The RGB part was taken with a Canon DSLR and 4 hours exposure time in the year 2010.
The Halpha part was taken on June 2013 with an ATIK 383l+ and Baader Ha filter, 7nm. -> 2 hours.
Processing with PixInsight.

Stars and Stripes
A "Patriotic" Cygnus Loop
4 hours of Ha and 4 hours of OIII, combined to make a synthetic RGB. While tweaking the colors, it just started looking like a tattered American Flag to me so I ran with it. I thought it was appropriate for the coming July 4th
Camera: QSI 683 w/Astrodon 3nm Ha and OIII filters
Optic: Canon 200mm f/2.8 L at f/4
Mount: Paramount MX
Exposures: 12 x 20 minutes each filter.

i realize APOD is usually a picture, but the following graphic might be of interest

among other things it shows what a big leap getting to something out of the solar system will be.
