Safest bet in the world. If it ends, you don't have to pay. If it doesn't end, you still don't have to pay
Good bet! I'll make that bet, too! :D

Now I'll just have to find some one who'll bet against me, so that I can collect those $10,000! :D

Ann
I think you misunderstand the bet, you are the one wagering $10,000, but, no worries, you only have to pay if the world ends.

It goes to show that I never make bets. I just don't believe the world will end and take care of my debts. Anyway, no one would believe me If I said I'm willing to risk $10,000 to win a bet!

I don't get the alignment brouhaha. If the "best" alignment already happened in 1998, and nothing earth-shaking took place that year, why would it matter that the Earth and the Sun and the center of the Milky Way will be sort-of-aligned this year? Are we talking about some bad cosmic feng shui?

Of course it can't be that catastrophe-mongerers (who can't even talk about the real dangers, such as climate change) need some corroborating evidence, apart from the Mayan Calender, that the Earth is going to come to an end in December 2012.

Naaah, that can't be it.

More than a few 'doomsday prophets' predicted the end of civilization, and when we look at the present, worldwide society I think many of us will agree that those prophets were correct.

Holiday travel alert: Storms deliver foot of snow in central US, tornado in Alabama
By Miguel Llanos, NBC News
<<The first major wintry storm of the season hammered the Midwest on Thursday, causing a pileup in blizzard conditions that killed three people, dumping a foot of snow in some areas and creating problems for holiday travelers during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

At O'Hare airport in Chicago, the nation's second busiest, more than 150 flights were canceled Thursday and some regional flights were being delayed by around two hours. Up to 4 inches of snow is forecast at O'Hare, Weather Channel forecaster Brian Fortier told NBC News, including the possibility of a heavy snow shower there Thursday evening. Southwest Airlines canceled all flights out of Chicago's Midway airport starting at 4 p.m. local time, NBCChicago.com reported. The storm system also cut power to 400,000 homes and businesses, and spawned a tornado that flipped vehicles in Mobile, Ala.

At least six deaths were tied to the snowstorms: In Iowa, three people died Thursday in a pileup involving more than 30 vehicles on Interstate 35, NBC affiliate WHO-TV reported; in Wisconsin, slick road conditions led to two fatalities; and in Utah, a woman who tried to walk for help after her car became stuck in snow was found dead, officials said late Wednesday. Search and rescue crews on snowmobiles found her buried in the snow just a few miles from her car.

Blizzard or winter storm warnings were issued for 16 states on Thursday, Weather Channel meteorologist Mike Seidel told TODAY. Northeast cities can expect rain and wind from the system Friday morning, said NBC meteorologist Bill Karins. Most of the snow should move into Canada Friday night.

A foot of snow fell on Des Moines, Iowa, by early Thursday and residents across the state were urged to stay off the roads. "Because of the wind, travel is pretty treacherous, especially into Iowa, as the storm moves east," National Weather Service meteorologist Scott Dergan said. The snow cover will drag temperatures much lower in Iowa and Nebraska, he added. "We're talking single digits. We may even see some sub-zero temperatures in Nebraska. This cold weather will stick around for several days, maybe until the day after Christmas. So we're definitely going to have a white Christmas." Blowing snow led to school closures in parts of Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri, plus the closure of all state government offices in Iowa. Storms in those four states left around 130,000 homes without power. >>

I'm still here, so I guess that the world didn't come to an end. Happy bak-tun, by the way, or whatever it's called.

Isn't it funny that all this Mayan calendar hoopla coincides so closely with Christmas? And the bak-tun does an even better job than Christmas on falling on the day of the winter solstice.

Personally I believe that these solstice legends, feasts and ceremonies are secondary to the solstice itself. And the solstice, unlike the particular legends, feasts and ceremonies, are common to us all, or at lest to those of us who live far away from the equator to notice it.

Ahhh, Spring is just a couple of months away. We just have to get through the horri-bull zone of winter. Shovel-shovel. Push-push. Plow-plow. ETC.-ETC.
