Anybody want to get rich? Let's build some replica conkers for arachnophobes. I bet they'd sell like lottery tickets!

There's an incredibly tiny, cute jumping spider on the wall right next to my computer right now. I wish I had a macro lens to take a photo of it. It's only about 2-3 millimeters at its longest dimension.

Yeah! They ARE cute when they're that small. They have to take such BIG hops just to get around.

Well....it wasn't fuzzy at all and it did not even jump once. Actually it did not seem to be very active at all. :(

Poor spider bot doesn't even have 8 legs.

Yeah, I don't think you can call it a spider. Hexapod is more appropriate.

You know though; something like that may have a place in exploring planets where it would have to traverse soft soil.

I think the pointed legs might be a disadvantage, however, if you put some snowshoe type pads on the ends ... Still, eight legs would be better, especially if the front pair could rotate horizontally in front, and perhaps even grasp ...

Yeah, but the more joints and moving parts it has the more chances it has to fail in such a harsh environment. You have to wonder if the simplicity of the wheel is really trumped by the versatile multi-leg system.

Perhaps place wheels at the end of each leg that could be locked or unlocked. Unlocked for faster travel accross plains and locked for climbing up slopes.

I've got a hexapod robot. The advantage is that it can climb over things that would be impossible for a wheeled device. The disadvantage is that the legs are complex and fairly fragile. I have seen some nice hybrid wheel/leg designs proposed for Martian exploration robots.
