On a freezing cold winter night on December 12th 2015 at Red Rock Canyon State Park in Mojave Desert, California, I managed to capture an extraordinary astronomic phenomenon: a meteoroid explosion.

I was out there all by myself in pitch-dark desert shooting astrophotography time lapse hoping to capture a few frames of light streaks from Geminid meteor shower which had peaked a few days prior to that night. It was indeed a great night with dozens of sightings of sparking meteoroids, but the result of time lapse sequence was overwhelming and mind blowing. It was a bright spark illuminated the entire rim of eroded sandstone canyon, followed by orange fume floating in the sky.

According to my calculations based on the time lapse setting and EXIF data from the resulting images, the glowing orange fume floated in the air for a matter of 38.5 minutes until it framed out.

As the icy particle of the meteoroid about the size of a sand grain enters the Earth's stratosphere at a such high speed, it explodes and turns into plasma due to atmospheric friction. The energy of the plasma stimulates molecules of the air and forces them emit photons, resulting in the glowing fume-like particle that floats in the sky.

Subsolar Point, Kailua Kona, May 18, 2016, 12:20 PM. Also known as Lahaina Noon, it is a tropical solar phenomenon where the sun passes exactly overhead at solar noon, resulting in a few minutes of no lateral shadows. This happens twice a year in Hawaii, and can only be observed on the tropics. Unfortunately some clouds came in right after the zenith minute, but you get the idea. Hunters full Moon

Taking advantage of the full moon of June, which this year coincided with the solstice, several photographers were friends to hunt out after the stunning town of Espejo, in the Cordovan countryside (Spain).
The conditions were excellent, the air was clean and clear, there was not a single cloud.
At a distance of just over 14 km from Castle Espejo, in the middle of a field of freshly cut wheat, we took our cameras and tripods and we hope to come out of the place expected.
I put my camera about 300 meters back to also hunt the hunters.

Cazadores de Luna llena.

Aprovechando la Luna llena de Junio, que este año coincidía con el Solsticio, varios amigos fotógrafos quedamos para cazarla saliendo tras el imponente pueblo de Espejo, en la Campiña cordobesa.
Las condiciones eran inmejorables, el aire estaba limpio y transparente, no había una sola nube.
A una distancia de algo más de 14 km del castillo de Espejo, en mitad de un campo de trigo recién segado, sacamos nuestras cámaras y trípodes y esperamos a que saliera por el lugar esperado.
Yo puse mi cámara unos 300 metros más atrás para cazar también a los cazadores.

This sequence shows just how much the local light pollution from passers-by can dramatically enhance startrails nightscape! Leaving it to chance over such a long period does carry its risks, but I managed to get a great shot this time

Here is a video I made from 30 single frames on the 12th of August 2016.
The smoke trail from a bright Perseid can be seen up to 13minutes after the meteor passed by.
Each frame is 25s, f/2.8, and ISO 3200. The video is shown at 6 frames per sec.
