You said it was a good thing I wasn't very confident in my thinking this was a rendering of some sort, and not an actual astronomical image. Did I misunderstand something there? There were enough negated negatives to be a little confusing.

Anyway, I stopped looking at paintings and renderings and started focusing on images of actual objects.

Ah! The object at which you were looking -- the yellow disk or sphere quadrant -- is an astronomical image, not a rendering of it. (I'm confident that it came from the May 4, 2005 APOD, rotated and flipped vertically and with the edge-on rings and moon removed.) My apologies for not making that clearer; I was responding solely to what you posted about the yellow disk or sphere.

I had hoped that the background (brown rather than black) and the bisecting thingie would be enough to get people to start looking at something other than photographs. I meant to make this a challenge, but not quite so much of one. SO hard to get the balance right (for me, anyway!)!

I have looked at every APOD thumbnail that exists and every APOD image with brown in it, and have not found it! So I have questions... I have questions!

Chris, did you manipulate the image/crop in any way? Is the size of the crop true to the image from which it was taken? Has the orientation been changed? Was it taken from the APOD image itself, or an image that the APOD image links to?

The image is cropped from the larger image the APOD links to. That is the only thing done- no changes to color, orientation, etc. And the larger image is just that- a bigger version of the view shown on the main APOD page, not a different image or some sort of link error.

I chose this particular image to stimulate some additional discussion on another thread that was very active, but hasn't been lately.

No. in this game you should be the first one to find the APOD image, that this has been cropped from.
after finding the APOD, you have to post the link here. then you are going to choose a crop for next round.
if you think it's a part of NGC 253, search it in APOD Search and post the link here.

Here's a little hint: I chose this image because it's relevant to this discussion, and I thought it might stimulate some more posts there. If somebody doesn't get the answer in the next day or so, I'll be very disappointed!
