Comet 46P/Wirtanen over the Bighorn Mountains, Wyoming

To create this image I first shot a 4 panel mosaic of the comet using a Nikon D750 and Nikon 180mm f2.8 lens on an iOptron Skytracker mount. Those shots were 2.5 minutes, f/5, ISO 1000. Then I turned off the tracking and shot a time-lapse of the comet setting to later use for reference so I could position and align the comet exactly as it appeared behind the mountain. After the comet set, I shot 2 15-minute images of the mountain. Then I combined all 6 images as accurately as I could.

Professional Astronomers versus Amateur Astronomers
At this moment, only a door separates the professional astronomers and amateur astronomers. At that side of the door, the professionals sitting warmly (maybe) inside observing the universe with telescopes. At this side of the door, we the amateurs standing coldly outside capturing the stars with cameras.

A closeup of the well known Flaming Star Nebula with AE Aurigae, a hot blue star in the constellation Auriga, about 1500lys away.

Night of Augustus the 12th to 13th, the night of the 2018 Perseids meteor shower's peak. Storms are hitting France from west to east. We fortunately are in the French Alps at the observatory of Saint-Véran, one of the highest in Europe reaching an altitude of barely 3000 m. Lightning are ripping across the horizon all around us. Nevertheless, the sky above is so clear that we are able to see meteors raining down.

This picture was taken that night and reveals a combination of a Perseid meteor falling beside the Milky way, a quite intense air glow and, just above the most active storm cell, luminous reddish flashes of sprites rising up into the sky!

It is actually a composite of 2 consecutive untracked subframes from a timelapse movie, 20 sec. each, at 6400 ISO with a Canon 6D + 16-35mm lens at 16mm F/4. Only the Perseid has been kept from the first frame and merged to the second frame at its same exact position.

Comet 46P/Wirtanen on Dec. 10th, 2018.

A long and patiently time out yesterday evening to wait for a break in the clouds to get enough data of the "Christmas Comet" 46P/Wirtanen in the south-eastern part of Austria.


Used my 10inch Newtonian reflector and full format DSLR to get a close view on the nucleus:

Soap Bubble Nebula (PNG75.5+1.7) is a very faint nebula which was discovered only in July 2010 by amateur astronomer Dave Jurasevich.
