From Unesco web site: "The Necropolis of Pantalica extends over some 1,200 m from north to south and 500 m from east to west in the region of Sortino. In the hilly terrain (caverns and precipices) and a natural environment of great beauty, about 5,000 tombs are visible, most of which have been hewn out of the rock face. Archaeological research has brought to light, in this zone, vestigial remains of dwellings from the period of Greek colonization. Materials of Mycenean origin and monumental structures were recognised, enabling the identification of the Anaktoron (Prince's Palace). Similarly, it has been possible to identify a period of reoccupation of the site in the 9th-10th centuries: the zone was in fact used for the defence against invasions of Sicily by the Arab armies."

Here the lights represents the super - natural dimension of a place where can still be still felt the presence of these ancient souls from the people who built those tombs.

Moon is rising over the city of Thessaloniki

In this wide field image, the full moon is rising over the second largest city in Greece, Thessaloniki. I was planning to make this image last year because I saw the orbit of the moon coming out of the city's landmark the White Tower and had to wait patiently so it would come at the same spot. Weather was good and after 12 months I was waiting at the perfect spot!

Here is my image from Badlands National Park taken May 18th, 2015. This image contains pink aurora (lower left), light pollution (orange on the horizon), green air glow, and the Milky Way.

"What comes to mind when you think about the geology and night sky of our national parks? Does beauty, or even inspiration come to mind? Starlight and geology share a unique quality, they both required an inconceivable amount of time to form in relation to human lifespans. The starlight collected in this picture traveled millions of miles and originated thousands of years ago in our Milky Way Galaxy, while the sedimentary rocks seen in the foreground were deposited approximately 28-37 million years ago during the Paleogene Period as mountains and volcanoes to the west released sediment into low-lying regions. The striking timescales required to create our night skies and geologic wonders such is remarkable and thought-provoking." -Matthew Dieterich

Thank you for considering my image!

Best,

Matt Dieterich

Lyra and the MIlkyWay are setting behind the marvelous landscape of Meteora Greece. The ligthts on the right side of the image are coming from monasteries that are built over the rocks many years ago and I believe they provide a better feeling of time passing (or not passing...) through the years.
