The "True" Giant in Sculptor

NGC 289

The bright central region of this galaxy is only about 3 arc min in diameter but the extensive
and very faint complex blue outer arms, revealed in this deep exposure, extend the the size of
the galaxy out to 14 arc min across. At an estimated distance of 75 Million light years, this
makes the true size of this galaxy a gigantic 300,000 light yrs across or more than twice the
size of our own Milky Way galaxy!

The aurora borealis and constellations brightly reflect on a flat calm Tobin Harbor, Lake Superior during a late September 2014 trip to Isle Royale. This photo, taken 9/28/14 catches a brief but bright auroral substorm, having been triggered by the autumn equinox. Just as the sky brightened, I was fortunate enough to find a clearing to position my tripod (even though it still was in the water because of the lack of dry shoreline) to catch the entire sequence of this auroral substorm from bright arc to the burst of rays and waves of light that stretched overhead at times. I was on the last boat of the season leaving Isle Royale, and am grateful for this rare opportunity and perfect conditions to capture this memory.

The South Pacific is famous for lot of spots, where you can watch the migrating whales. One of the spot is, of course, Rarotonga of the Cook Islands. I saw few of them in daylight, but the biggest one was in the sky... Can you see it too?

The RGB component (upper picture) was captured from my backyard observatory in Rosario, Argentina (http://asterisk.apod.com/download/file. ... &mode=view).
It was combined with an older picture selected as APOD (http://apod.nasa.gov/apod/ap110511.html) consisting of narrow band visible and broad band near-infrared, which I used as luminance of the RGB image (bottom picture).
