I think we're basically on the same page now Chris. I do realize that I likely overstated the potential depth of river carved canyons. And speaking of canyon causation, was Mars' great canyon caused by erosion, by tectonic separation or by both?
Just as zero is not equal to infinity, everything coming from nothing is illogical.

I think most experts lean toward a combination of tectonics (rifting) and erosion (both by water and wall collapse).
