Normally when I can not enter APOD is because the Internet is full in my area.
On jul 1 if there was a technical glitch in USA maybe for the "weather" !!

I thought maybe APOD had been sucked into a black hole, spit out the other side and was posting images to another race of beings that were thinking "Your just now figuring that out !!"

I suspected the website had been affected by the Linux servver problems caused by the additional second added due to the slowing of Earth's rotation.

My friends and relatives from Roswell (circa 1948+/-) were trying to get my attention. They were successful.

I was watching 'Falling Skies' and thought it was real. I was convinced D.C. was hit when I checked out apod and it did not instantaneously initialize appropriately on my html viewer.

This seemed like the only explanation.

"Herbert," Reed said, "I thought you couldn't see into the future more than forty-eight hours ahead." - "That ́s right"
"Then how could you see all the things you predicted tonight?"
Herbert went over to the window. "I wouldn't have known if I hadn't read the astronomy book." He pointed to the west, where the sun was going down. "Tomorrow it won ́t be like this."
"What do you mean?" Reed said, suddenly afraid. "What are you trying to say?"
"That ... tomorrow the sun will be different. Maybe it's better this way. I wanted them to be happy. That's why I lied to them."
"What is it?" Reed cried. "What's going to happen tomorrow? You must tell me!"
"Well, tomorrow the sun - I've forgotten the word. What do they call it when a star suddenly becomes a billion times hotter than it was before?"
"A nova?" Reed cried.
"That's it. Tomorrow ... the sun is going to explode!"

...maybe there is a technical breakdown somewhere. Then I heard about the leap second. Then the bad weather and power failures near DC. Then I stopped worrying. Same old, same old. Most of us will survive, and someone will resurrect APOD. Thanks!

It would have been nice if a message about why APOD was down had been posted on the NASA home page.

First, I rushed over to Facebook to inform bystander that the end of the world was nigh and we were doomed (again) and then I assumed it was a power outage. Only after running a trace route and realizing APOD was hosted where it was did I realize it was actually a major power outage and not one of the short ones we get about once a year.

Me too. Any coincidence that we're both in Kansas and that this was our first thought about the outage?

I thought Congress had cut funds that would allow old ladies like me and neophytes to the computer to engage the brain in something other than their imperious attitude. So glad I was wrong.

More proof that we have worn out the welcome of our long suffering Mother Earth, and we need to go colonize some other planets and start exploiting and exhausting them. But unfortunately there are no good candidate planets, and even if there were, we don't have any way of getting to them. So maybe we can start trying to live in a more caring and sustainable manner here on the only planet we have.

Like many, I was fearing that the U.S. Govt. was stupid enough to cut off APOD service.
I don't care the U.S.A. are not my country. ESA and NASA are the only institutions that still gives us hope and dreams of a better future while the rests of the world wants to plunge us into war, poverty and obscurantism.
« Luckily » a cross-search told me that the region where it was hosted was having a power outage due to extraordinary climate.
My thoughts to those that were affected by it.
