Luckily, science doesn't require belief. All you have to do is gather up some commonly available facts and perform the calculations yourself.

That's a good response to that attitude. But I've talked with those, when you suggest they look it up if they don't believe it, who say "I'm not going to do that!" Their mentality is apparently that belief trumps the facts. It's the same rationality level as the global warming deniers.
