Solved: What is it? Space mystery object
Re: What is it? Space mystery object #5
Another tough one. My first thought was Victoria crater from above, but it doesn't seem to match up. Any hints?
Re: What is it? Space mystery object #5
My first thoughts were Io, or perhaps sunspots, but, as yet, I've been unable to come up with a match. Good one, Art.

Ha, ha! Ok, now I know what it is. I just have to find the right APOD.

Did you resample the image, or just crop it? It looks an awful lot like

I found three APODs it could be with absolutely no way to determine which one it is that you picked.

I think we can all accept repeats as equivalent.bystander wrote:I found three APODs it could be with absolutely no way to determine which one it is that you picked.

Re: What is it? Space mystery object #7
In fact, it was the 2001 APOD that I used.bystander wrote:The correct answer.

What is it? Space mystery object #8
Identify the APOD from which this image fragment was taken.
Re: What is it? Space mystery object #8
I think this is a relatively easy one. Anyone else care to identify it?

Re: What is it? Space mystery object #8
I recognized the formation immediately, and remembered the nebula it's found in. But over the last day I searched through the APODs three or four times (keyword "t?????") and couldn't find the image used (Where's Waldo?)RJN wrote:I think this is a relatively easy one. Okay, I guess the fifth time's the charm.

Re: What is it? Space mystery object #8
Yeah, I probably made a bit too easy by using those particular pillars, but I thought the background color might be a bit confusing. Probably should have used the dust lanes from the bottom just right of center. You are correct, sir.Chris Peterson wrote:I recognized the formation immediately, and remembered the nebula it's found in. Identify the APOD from which this image fragment was taken. This was chosen to deliberately lead you astray. Be careful what you assume.

I haven't located it but texture-wise it sure looks like:

Very good! What struck me about this was that even with a large crop, the result looked strikingly like a nebula rather than a solid body.RJN wrote:The correct answer.
