Colors of the moon in clouds

Posted: Sun Aug 25, 2013 9:37 am
by alcyone
When you see the moon in the eyepiece of the telescope you problably not see the colors of the geological features of the moon surface. However, when you take a color picture of this surface and when you process it by saturation of colors, moon shows another appearance. HDR process helps to stack moon face and clouds pictures in the real situation.

Enjoy it !

Mirrored lunar fogbow

© Thomas Kast, All Rights Reserved
http://www.facebook.com/salamapaja

Last night (August 24, 2013) I was hoping for a great aurora show due to the expected CME and went to this lake near Yli-Ii, Finland. In this rather cold August night (+8C) there was patchy fog, especially in open fields. This lake remained clear for a long time. Unfortunately there were almost no Northern lights. At one point I saw this white bow with the Waning Gibbous behind me, a lunar fogbow. The very small droplets of the fog behave like raindrops and reflect the light. These fogbows are usually white for the human eye because the sunlight reflected from the Moon is very weak.

Gear was D700 +14-24mm and I exposed for 30s at ISO400.

This weekend we had some really nice ISS flybys. Here is one made at Sunday evening from the port of Thessaloniki. I had to yell at people so they would notice this -2.6mag moving object just above their heads. I wonder how people sees UFO's all the time and miss such a bright slow moving object.

Inspired by today's APOD, I couldn't help but try my own processing of this nebula. In addition to the wide band data used in the APOD I also included some narrow band from NICMOS for a more complete view of the nebula.

The object you thought might be a planetary nebula is apparently NOT a planetary nebula.
