i think it's good to have three crops in each challenge.
what about this:
"Mr. A" solves crop #1, so he chooses the 1st crop in the next challenge.
"Mr. B" solves crop #2, so he chooses the 2nd crop in the next challenge.
"Mr. C" solves crop #3, so he chooses the 3rd crop in the next challenge.

when i search images in APOD. it says "Found 500 items.Displaying 200 of them."
and there is no Next button to see other 300 items. why?

I guess that says something about the way you search images. I found the third one trivial- it didn't take me more than a minute. The second one was also very easy- a couple of minutes as most. The first one is hard- it's fairly obvious what it is astronomically, but finding the specific APOD seems not so easy. It's a common palette (and I don't search by color, anyway), and there's not enough detail to really nail down the exact object. Search terms for the second two limited the choices to just a dozen or so for each.

The first one is the one I thought would be the hardest; the second and third would depend on level of familiarity with astronomy. I'm not surprised you got those quickly! And yes, I suppose it does say something about the way I search images. As someone who knows.... well, nothing, actually, I have to go with what's available to me. Color works for me, so that's what I use.

The few times I've done this, I've chosen crops primarily by dates that have some relevance for me; it's a bonus when the image has some revelance, too.

<<Izzy was the official mascot of the Atlanta 1996 Summer Olympics. Named Whatizit (What is it?) at its first introduction at the close of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, the computer animated character with the ability to morph into different forms was a departure from the Olympic tradition in that it didn't represent a nationally-significant animal or human figure. Whatizit, was designed by John Ryan, senior animation director of Atlanta-based design firm DESIGNefx. Whatizit originally appeared as a blue, tear-shaped "blob" with rings around his eyes and tail. He wore high-top sneakers and had star-shaped pupils. His arms and legs were also short with a toothy grin showing both rows of teeth. He was later modified to have longer limbs to give a more athletic look.

After a very critical reception to Whatizit's introduction during the closing ceremonies of the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, ACOG began work to reshape the character specifically focusing on children, who were far more attracted to the character than adults. His greatest change came about after he lost the bottom row of teeth and gained a nose. He was then referred to as Izzy. Also, his tongue became visible, and his limbs became longer, skinnier, and more athletic in appearance.

Despite continued efforts to evolve his look, Izzy proved very unpopular; a range of nicknames appeared in media outlets, such as "The Sperm in Sneakers." Busch Gardens Europe, a theme park in Williamsburg, Virginia, named a new Wild Mouse roller coaster after the mascot, but the name has since been changed.

I think they meant to say an entire solar system:

Schwarzchild radius = 3 km x 18 billion ~ 54 billion km.

I think this is just a technical way of letting you know you've constructed a poor search. The search engine is stateless, so they simply return what they want to display on a single page, without the ability to return more in a followup. Even getting 200 hits is a hint that you should construct a narrower search.

this is officially solid. The first one is really hard, so i agree with chris. I originally thought it was a picture of a maria on mars. its the same colours, but the more I look at it and the longer I've searched I'm starting to think its an apod of the sun from soho. I've tried looking at a lot of apods, and I assume because the cropped photo is quite hazy that it is a small part of the sun which makes it even harder you have to get up close and personal and try and find the matching sun. Its hard. Just a helping hand if your interested peoples!

Im probably wrong but the little prominence (which probably isnt so little in real life) top left about 10pm-11pm looks like the cropped picture. If im right ill be angry because i looked at this picture first and I came back to it.

wonderboy, I admire your persistance, and am sorry to tell you that your last link is not the solution to the first crop. (So no need to be angry! ) Actually, I'm completely puzzled as to how you came up with that!

The crop is taken from the image as it appeared on APOD, not from a much larger original.

I was thinking that you had cropped the edges of the sun where theres been a little solar prominence or something. so thats the way the image looks on APOD? you never cropped it?

I took the image as it appears on APOD and cut out the little part that appears above as wozit.jpg. What colors are you seeing in that image?
