Very interesting! The picture is called "Trails of Canopus and Achernar". I have to wonder which of the trails belongs to Canopus and which belongs to Achernar. It is in fact not totally inconceivable that the blue trail just might belong to Canopus, which, in spite of being an F-type star, is bluer than one might think. It is bluer than A-type star Altair, for example.

Achernar, a B-type star, is not as blue as you'd expect for a star of that spectral class, even though it is clearly bluer than Canopus.

But Canopus ought to look very bright, and Achernar should not be quite as bright. To me, the blue trail looks possibly brighter than any other trail in this picture. So again, which trail belongs to which star?

Sirius Diffusion Over The Gore Range

I had an idea for a shot with constellations Orion and Canis Major (with Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky) setting over the rugged peaks of the Gore Range. So with a thin moon rising in the east, I had lot of cold weather gear and what I hoped was a pretty good plan to make it happen up on Ute Pass.

Everything went according to my plan with clear dark skies and the constellations lining up horizontally above the peaks right as gentle light from a rising moon started to illuminate the scene. But then, some thin clouds showed up to diffuse the light from the brighter stars and reflect the light pollution visible from the Summit County ski towns a little ways to the south. This changed the look of the scene entirely and for me, it made the scene turn into something really special!

Mientras fotografiaba la puesta, un Arco Iris apareció a mi espalda. Giré la cámara y lo cacé. Fui casi tan rápido como mi sombra.
While photographing the sunset a rainbow appeared behind me. I turned the camera and hunted. I was almost as fast as my shadow.

Don’t let the appearance of soft beige whiskers of the Teddy Bear Cholla fool you. These bristles are hardened spines, each tipped with a microscopic barb that can detach and imbed an intruder with the slightest touch. A deep appreciation of the value of wilderness character against a rare backdrop of dark skies is found on a gentle northwestern bajada of Joshua Tree’s Pinto Basin.

Giant arc flare near AR 11987 - 23/feb/2014 13:12h TU

Today I was alerted of one big arc evolving very fast and bright. With almost no time to prepare all the equipment I was able to take this terrific picture.

PST, DMK618 and EQ mount. Procesing software: Registax 6, PixInsigh Core and Gimp.

Copyleft: Jaime Fernandez
Click to view full size image
After analyzing the source video captured, I noticed the very fast movement of the flare going back to the Sun surface at an incredible high speed.

Video is a 2000 frames @ 60fps, around 2:15' of live video. Captured video was accelerated 10x (600fps) and repeated three times to better observe the movement of the arc flare (right side of the arc) falling into Sun surface (better seen at full screen).
