Hi Bob Anderson,
Beauty of an image, M-31. It's amazing what narrowband filtering can do for the brightest objects - brings out all the detail in the arms. Thanks for the submission.

This digital composite is a tribute to Curiosity, uniting Earth and Mars across a cosmic divide of over 350 million miles. I've been hooked by all the developments from Curiosity ever since watching footage about the "Seven Minutes of Terror", where the rover loses communication with its operators during atmospheric entry and must complete a flawless automated landing sequence, following meticulously coded software commands and a breathtaking array of technical wizardry. Personally speaking, the most compelling images from the surface of Mars are not ones which look "alien", as such, but the views which portray landscapes familiar to what we see here on Earth. When you look at the rover panoramas and find scenes akin to arid rocky regions of our own planet, it seems to underscore our place in the cosmos and reify these distant words which have been hitherto seen only as ethereal specks of light through the lenses of telescopes.

During development and pre-launch testing, NASA's interplanetary vehicles are often put through their paces in rocky desert areas such as Nevada, Arizona and Chile, as the geology of these regions matches the sort of extraterrestrial terrain the robot will be encountering on its far-flung travels. I looked into my archives and found a photograph of the Arizona desert (seen here on the left hand side, taken when approaching the New Mexico border) which was not unlike some of the pictures that Curiosity has been sending back from its new home in Gale Crater.

The right half of this composite is a genuine shot from the surface of Mars which the rover captured a couple of weeks ago on August 8th. (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/m ... color.html). I have montaged NASA's CGI rendering of the parachute deceleration and rocket-powered descent stage in order to better illustrate the landing.

The graphic of the actual rover is courtesy of Jet Propulsion Laboratory and its original version can be found here: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/mission/overview/. Thanks also go to Canadian Astronomy for their shot of Curiosity's launch, taken whilst the vehicle escaped orbit by riding 285,000 pounds of of thrust aboard an Atlas 5 rocket in November 2011.

Heart Nebula - IC 1805, Sh2-190 with a meteor passing through it.
It was shot during the period of the Perseid meteor shower, so it might be a perseid... but can't really say.

More like "Watch for Perseids"

Took me quite a few shots to get this the other night during my camp out during the Perseid meteor shower, but it finally paid off.

Canon 5DMKII
NIKKOR 24mm 2.8 with nikon adapter
ISO 3200 at 20 seconds

The Perseid Meteor shower is the best star show of the year. A fellow star gazer friend and I both love space and also happen to love photography, so we packed up our gear and headed to the best place to observe the night sky that we know of, Mt. Lemmon. We set up 2 different time-lapses and this was a frame from one of them. In the time-lapse it shows us and other stargazers sitting on the rock observing the Perseid Meteor Shower under the dark skies about 40 minutes out of Tucson in the Catalina Mountains. Unfortunately there was some cloud cover which limited our view, but we were still able to see an acceptable amount of shooting stars.

Because there were other observers using their flashlights in the area, I decided to add some light painting gestures to the shot here and there. The shot is of me holding my phone and doing a circle motion and it just happened to be perfect timing with the meteor going by above the tree.

The Photo was taken at 1:48 AM. The clouds are reflecting the city lights of Tucson, Arizona. I've also added a warmer temperature to the image, but not much.

Camera Details:

Canon 5D MK II
Canon EF 24-70mm f/2.8L
20 Second exposure @ ISO-1600

ISS passes over a Thunderstorm
Copyright Herbert Raab (http://www.flickr.com/photos/herbraab/)

Ths International Space Station (ISS) passes over a thunderstorm. Stars of the constallations Corona Borealis, Bootes and Canes Venatici are also visible above the clouds, many of them fading out as the clouds spread over the image during the exposure. The gap in the trail of the ISS is caused by the dark time between two of the 26 single shots (each of 30 seconds) that were stacked for this image.
